Oil cap popped off- advice needed Sign In

I'm not very clued up on cars, but I'm in a complete tizz about my Skoda Felice (R reg) and I desperately need some advice.

A couple of months ago, after completely trouble free running for over a year (normal servicing etc all ok), it went spectacularly 'phut' with clouds of smoke, and it turned out that thethermostat had failed, all teh water and oil had exited through the manifold and a bit of the engine needed replacing because it had bent in the process. So, after surgery, thecar came back and has again been running with no problems apart from stalling a few days ago in very heavy rain which we put down to wet plugs.

My husband has just called me from work to say that he got most of the way there and the oil cap blew off, spraying the engine with oil and resulting in loads of smoke. He managed to get there safely and has sent out for a replacement cap and more oil and he's going to try to determine whether he can get home safely later. He said the splatter over the inside of the engine seemed to have a little bit of water in it as well as oil, but wasnt sure if that was because its been very wet here recently or if it had been in with the oil.

Are there any likely causes of this that arent a total disaster? We really don't have the money for a big garage bill again, plus I desperately need the car early next week to go to a funeral a hundred miles away. Is there anything we can sensibly check or do ourselves to see what might have caused this and how bad the problem could be? Any advice at all would be welcome, I'm worrying myself sick about him getting home safely and whether we'll have a functional car early in the week

Not sure about your vehicle, but if there is enough pressure built up in crankcase to blow the oil filler cap off, the PCV system may be plugged. If this is plugged, the crankcase can not vent properly and will build up pressure. It usually blows oil out of the weakest point. Usually the oil dipstick, but could be anywhere. Hope this helps you a little.
