Oil Pump problems...	Sign In

So im buying a 1986 Pontiac Fiero and the oil pump is bad. Car was being driven at the time when it went out. The guy said that the car just shut off while going down the highway. Is there a sensor or something to shut the engine off or could the engine be blown? Its a V6...

He said its able to turn over but im worried it may have gotten really hot. I have never had a oil pump go bad so im not sure.

I really don't know if this car used a low oil pressure shut down. If so my guess is either fuel pump wouldn't work or spark defeated.

The issue is for the situation right now is WHO is taking responsibility for testing this engine? Just trying stuff could make it worse and if you can't get an pump failure verified and the possible/likely damage assessed then value the car as if it needs everything and decide from there,

Well all i know is he said he was driving down the highway when the oil pressure began to go up and down. He took it out of gear and rolled to a stop where it then died. He was told it was the oil pump so we are placing a new one in it now to see if it will run. But if it was the pump could it have ruined the engine?

You should diagnose why it doesn't start first if at all possible. It either lack fuel or spark. It most certainly could be junk if oil pressure zeroed out for any reason. Can't say right now. With some care - you could try to artifically pump up oil pressure, take compression readings and more before dumping $$ into a possible lost cause,
