Hey guys, on a 2000 Dodge Neon 2.0 L Engine with 89,400 k miles, when I was going to replace the spark plugs & wires I noticed I had some oil puddling up around the old plugs. I was just wondering what this meant and what needs to be done to correct it. A buddy of mine told me I need to replace the spark plug tubes, but I figured I'd see what you guys thought of this situation. If it is the spark plug tubes whats the basic step for replacement. Thanks, -Jim

You just need to replace the valve cover gasket. It comes with seals around the spark plug tubes to keep the oil out of them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

alright thanks HT, is there any easy way to get the oil out of there or is the only way to let it just drain into the cylinder and let it burn it's way out?

Yep, letting it drain into the cylinder is about the only way to get it cleaned out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

alright thanks, I'm in the process of the repair now. The only thing that's fighting me is the spark plug tube gaskets...is there a trick or good technique to getting the old one's out of the valve cover? Thanks.

Tap a thin blade screwdriver between the seal & v/c wall and pop it out. Lube the new seals & support the backside of the v/c on a block of wood when driving the new seals in (take note of the position of the old seals so you don't put the new ones in backwards)

If the rubber is real hard and brittle, then you will likely have to dig it all out, piece by piece. Just make sure you get it all out or the new one won't seal right.

Alright thanks for your help guys, it's all back together now and working great. I'm going to keep the old plugs in while the last little bit of that oil that made it's way into the cylinder burns off. With the exception of one seal they all came out in 1 piece. Thanks for all your help!
