OK to install used CM ? Sign In

1995
Mercury
Grand Marquis
4.6 engine
137,000

I've had my car into the dealer and they feel the reason it wont idle and stall when cold is the PCM/ ECM, replacement cost of this is approx. $400 and like the IAC before it it's mine weather it fix's the problem or not. My first question is there any problem with using a used ECM and installing it myself?

my second question is: I've found the ECM in the firewall below and to the right of the master cylinder but if anyone can tell me after removing the two nuts and the electrical connection does it slide out forward into the engine compartment or must it be removed from under the dash?

No, you can't put a used PCM in there. This car is OBD2 and the PCM is programmed for that vehicle, including the VIN number.

Possible but I really wouldn't advise it. Used modules is real risky business.

Agree with HT on no used modules. The policy of every boneyard I know is no returns on electrical parts once installed. That, however is the only way to find out if you got a bad one AFTER you've also paid a dealership to flash it and program it to your VIN. If you're shelling out that much money it would only make sense to buy a new one with a guarantee on it than chance swapping bad parts for bad parts and being at square one. They don't call it a junkyard for nothing after all.

Electrical components really don't like sitting outside exposed to the elements for years before you buy them.

Your better off getting a reman PCM and using yours as a core. The companies that reman have the ability to flash them. All you do is plug and play.
