2001 Grand Jeep Cherokee 4.0 6cyl 4WD with 133,657 miles bought it in 8/2007 warranty 24,000mile/2yrs
7/2008 it won't start and over heated dealer fixed under warranty
10/2008 jerking and spurting over heated then didn't start dealer fixed under warranty again
both times I did not get a description of what was wrong with it just a receipt for the warranty payment.
After last fix engine turned several times then kicked over - happened every time it started
7/2009 engine light came on - dealer stated no longer under warranty go to autozone
went to autozone code was P1494 evap leak detection pump - no money - no fix kept riding
2/13/2010 car would not turn over was cranking but no start - on dashboard no gauge readings at all, dashboard lights work gas light is on engine light is on sentry key immobolizer system light is on,(all stays on) odometer was no read but now it is tow truck driver did diagnostic and it said no ecu found. took it to a mechanic after it was kidnapped by the tow truck driver and he said the same diagnostic no ecu found said I needed a new ecu cost at first was $150 (junkyard) then it went up to $710 (dealership) yeah I laughed and got it towed home. before I start replacing everything since I know nothing can anyone help me. I bought a diagnostic OBD II and hooked it up and it stated no link. I checked the batter with a multimeter and no voltage registered on the battery. I bought a jumpstarter but it still did not start. I see too many variables but if someone had a similar problem or knows what is wrong I surely would appreciate some advice (besides get a new car).

When you tried to scan it with a dead battery there will be no communication with the ECU because the ECU must be powered up. Put a fully charged battery in it and try the scan again. Post back with results. Also, check to see if you have fuel pressure and spark. Thats the first place I start at with a vehicle that isn't running is to verify the presence of both and go from there.

Ok Nick I put a brand new fully charged battery in and still the same results for diagnostic "no link" and the dashboard lights are on - which are gas, check engine, sentry immobilizer, and check gauges all stay on. None of the gauges are working but the digital odometer is working. I will check for fuel pressure and spark this weekend and post the results of both. (fyi - it was a half of tank of gas in the jeep before this happened)

The first thing to check is the battery right? But for me I always check first my spark plug then my battery. Battery has always reserve power even if it is dead. But you cannot tell if the spark plug if broke unless you check it first.
