Hoping you can clean that crap out is like not wearing a rubber on a $5 hooker. You're going to end up screwed, and its not in the way you wanted. The crap you showed in the pics is what ethanol becomes when it sits too long. So this truck has regular fuel which has 10% ethanol in it, it sat around for a few months or longer and on top of it was tampered with. Toss the tank. There is pretty much nothing that will fully get rid of that crap that is stuck to the bottom of your tank. Toss the whole sending unit, strainer, fuel pump and the sender assembly. Yes, the initial cost sucks. But go ahead without it and see how much money you keep wasting to have a truck that isn't reliable. If you can't trust it to take you out of town, why even bother to have the thing?

If you can't trust it to take you out of town, why even bother to have the thing? Now I hear something that doesn't sound like, "I don't know what it is, spend tons of dosh and buy a new tank". I don't know how long it sat up before I bought it but I've had it on blocks a year. The truck is sound now, I put enough into it as well as go over all systems. It is worth putting a new tank into, However, if the strainer does in fact prevents that crap from damaging anything and can last a month or two before becoming clogged it is worth it to me to put a new strainer or fabing one with more surface area to take me to another cash cycle. I live on very small Disability check and am willing to endure an extra tank drop n push and forego the bean, rice and koolaid for a time SO! Nick Warner, Or anyone, here are the options: A :~( Brake out the cinder blocks and thumb and wait a couple of months then get a new tank B =~D. Put the old tank back with a new strainer then get a little joy outta the truck that has sucked up plenty cash and time and took up a parking spot for over a year then after a couple of months get a new tank. I don't mind the extra drop n push besides I might get a couple of small jobs that'll buy that tank, However, it will not be worth it if it damage the engine Fgghjggffgh

I don't think you have to worry about damaging the engine. We, as technicians look at doing a job twice as a total failure and we would never intentionally put ourselves in that position. If you don't have any problem doing all that work twice, go for it. You could ruin a new pump though. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

John Doe sport, It sucks and a rock and hard place if gucked up enough. Damn fuel w ethanol even just the 10% they claim here has ruined tons of older silly things, weed whackers, gas blowers and so on. Now use stabilizer, Chevron's Techron and a product to reduce harmful effects of the ethanol so it claims. I'm not driving a lot so watch how long it's been as best I can. Other assorted gas things I always run dry now and so far so good doing that for that stuff. I just don't know if you can dissolve what's already there. At best a product called SeaFoam is pretty strong stuff and has helped me with some fussy yard things but that was just 5 months and had some troubles BEFORE I started all the run dry thing or dump out the fuel for seasonal things. So, what to do for you? Drain off as much as possible and try solvents that alone don't help make an engine run better but might help clean it up. Tanks with baffles I just don't know an easy way to really clean out. Do you have a local junk yard you can check out what they have in person seeing the truck so you can guess if they don't tell you why it is there? If one has recent inspection sticker or clues. Don't even bother if rusty. IDK - here (MA) incoming stock to junk yards get all wheels and gas tanks removed before they put them out for plucking parts. If you try solvents and use up the gas it's a crap shoot and even those products aren't so cheap. Dunno if you can make up a strainer for fuel pump pick up. If you do try something make sure it tolerates fuel. I was thinking like aluminum bug screen as a maybe? Whatever you try and when have more fuel filters as they may catch junk quickly - dump the input side into glass and get a look at what may come out. I hate to see you just put it up on blocks part way into getting this thing to run right for you, T

Tom, Thanks, that was lots of useful info. I decided to take the Beans, Rice and Kool-Aid route, I ordered a new complete tank. I should've sold a kidney and a kid and bought a Tesla X. Fgghjggffgh

That would be a good move. If it was just the expense of a new strainer every now and again it would be one thing, but figure in the wrecked fuel pump and a tow truck to get it out of wherever it dies and it costs more than just doing the tank from the start. I'm not made of money either but unfortunately your vehicle and mine could care less if you're Bill Gates rich or cardboard box poor. Especially when you get one over 20 years old, you can expect things to come up that you may well not have the money to repair. It sucks, but anything with moving parts wears out and any liquid with organic hydrocarbons eventually deteriorates over time.

Friends, when I removed the tank there were four rubber mounting strips that are worn out, i'm having a time locating replacements. Anyone know where to buy some new ones? Fgghjggffgh

GM might have them, but you actually can rid those pretty cheaply. I've used a cheap nylon tow strap and cut pieces out of it, also have used several layers of inner tube to accomplish the same thing.
