Nissan Micra Losing Power Sign In

Hi,

Im back once again with another car with running/power troubles! (Remember the Escort Diesel solenoid problem, didnt get it sorted, so swapped for this). Details are:

Year of vehicle: 1995
Make of vehicle: Nissan
Model of vehicle: Micra
Engine size: 1.0
Mileage/Kilometers: 110,000
Petrol/Diesel: Petrol

The problem:

Recently it has been idling very low when coming to a junction and stopping. Sometimes it will cut out and start back up again straight away. Sometimes you can be going along and it loses power but still runs along and goes back to normal shortly after.

Last night everything was normal then suddenly the power went nearly altogether. It starts up fine and instantly, but I can only rev the car up to about 1000 rpm maximum. It drives along but extremely poorly, it stutters and kangeroo's along the road, up hills is nearly impossible but somehow I managed to get it home.

Once it goes past approx 1000 rpm thats when the stuttering kicks in. Any advice?

Thanks.

Wow. Several things come to mind. Dying at stops (dirty, sticky IAC), loss of power (timing belt jumped a tooth) or (plugged catalytic converter). Or, a multitude of other possibilities. Does it run smooth..no misfires? Vacuum leak could cause an erratic idle, but, wouldn't cause a severe loss of power. EGR sticking open? You might want to pull the plugs and see what they look like. Nice and white?, lean. Black and sooty?, rich. (MAP or O2 sensors?) Good luck.

The plugs are nice and white. The car runs smoothly, no misfiring. Theres a rattle coming from the exhaust when pulling away or the car struggling, my mate said that could be the cat converter.

Im not sure what some of the things your mentioning are, i.e. MAP?

Hi; I can see the Catalytic converter causing the severe loss of power, but it would have to be plugged SOLID to cause a stalling issue. Try removing the oxygen sensor from the exhaust and see if your power returns. (It's going to be noisy. LOL)
EGR: Exhaust gas recirculation. Normally, this valve opens at cruise speeds to allow inert exhaust gases into the cylinders to lower combustion temperatures. Thereby, lowering NOX and reducing 'pinging' (pre-ignition). The valve is suppose to close on decel and at idle. If it sticks open, it is like a huge vacuum leak.
MAP: Manifold Absolute Pressure: This sensor monitors engine vacuum and controls fuel accordingly. If the MAP sees a drop in vacuum, it thinks you are accelerating, thereby increasing fuel delivery. If the vacuum line to the MAP is broken or has fallen off, can cause a flooding condition. Not all cars use a seperate MAP sensor. Not sure about yours. Some use a MAP/BARO which does the same thing, but monitors barometric pressure as well. So, if you go from sea level to 10,000', you won't notice a difference unlike a carbureted car. (well, you may notice a difference trying to get to 10,000').

Re: Nissan Micra Losing Power Sign In

I am no expert but funny this question is brought up....I just done a head on a 92 ford ranger...When i was done it wasn't running right so i noticed the cat was getting very red(to me redder then average)...So i changed the cat...Well come to find out it was that, i had the wires in the wrong order.(Grr)...Well about 1 week after i started to get the same issue again and as you have stated above..I thought for sure it can't be the cat i just changed it.....Well what do you know the inside of the new cat fell to pcs and was turning the inside cone looking stuff sideways and was plugging it and when it did this on the road i could not climb a hill nore could i get up enough speed to get into traffic or to pass....So with my exp on this truck i would look into the cat as was stated in above post...Tony
