Need some help with camshaft terminology	Sign In

Hello all, can someone tell me what the difference between a camshaft pulley, sprocket, gear, and roller are? Is the camshaft pulley and sprocket the same thing? Are rollers the parts where the outside (non toothed) part of the belt rest, like the tensioner and idler? Or are these considered rollers? Or maybe some terms are used for camshafts with chains and others for belts?

Looked on the internet but I cant find a definite answer. Any help?

Sprocket, pulley, and gear are the same thing when your talking about belt or chain driven camshaft(s). A lot of times those words are mixed, but they pretty much mean the same thing.

Rollers (aka idlers and tensioner pulley) are the smooth faced pulleys the backside of the timing belt rides on. Roller can also mean the wheels on the bottom of a roller lifter or the wheel on the tip of a roller rocker arm. Sometimes you may hear from someone they have a roller engine. That usually means their engine has roller lifters and rockers.
