I have a 1998 s10 4.3. I was driving down the road and it died on me so I got it towed to the house and started testing on it I have 65psi fuel press and and I was getting fire I ran the codes on the ECM and the Cps(crankshaft pos sensor) code was on their so I replaced that and it still won't start. I ran a compression test and had about 150psi on all cylinders. So I need help

Did they set the timing when they did that tune up?

No.... But I just put a timing light on it and it is firing just before tdc. I just tried to advance and retard the timing and nothing.

Well,,,,,,you just made things worse......

1st....How did you test for spark & more importantly, where did you test for spark.....See if you have an injector pulse or tach reading....

Just for the heck of it see if it will run on starting fluid....

Footnote.........Get a mirror and look at the back of the intake manifold & dist base......see if there is a white mark on both the base & manifold......If there is.....line them back up and don't touch the dist again unless you have a high end scan tool & know what you are doing...

Re: My s10 won't start Sign In

I marked it before I moved it and it don't have injectors it a tb and no it will not start on starting fluid that is one of the first thing I tried. Sorry I forgot to say that. And I tested it with a spark tester that goes between the spark plug and wire. And it fired but that don't mean it is going through the plug so I pulled one out and and it was firing but it was wet(due to the fact of me trying to start it over and over again)so I know I will need new plugs but I don't understand why it just died and would not restart

Yep, Sidom is right. That was pretty much a trick question because i knew it wasn't adjustable and I wanted to know if anyone messed with the distributor synch but now you went ahead and did it yourself.

OK, it appears you just need to leave this thing alone because you have no idea what you are even working on. That is indeed a fuel injected engine.

I know old school carb. Engines I don't know a fu****g about those sensors or computers I have built a lot of engines in my day. And no it does not have single injectors so smart ass come at me again with something besides a fuel problem I do know it is getting gas in the cylinders

This is your one and only warning to watch your mouth.

You have a computer controlled fuel injected engine............. period
If you don't know what you're talking about, I don't advise you to argue with someone that does this for a living.

Re: My s10 won't start Sign In

Well I know it is getting fuel cause all my plugs were soaked wit gas. So what else do I need to check. And I apologize I am just so frustrated with this truck. I might just pull out the 4.3 and put a 350 small block in it with no computer.lol I just don't want to go to all that trouble.

Re: My s10 won't start Sign In

If your plugs are wet you either have no/insufficient spark or you have turned the distributor and thrown the injectors and rotor out of synch with the ignition. The distributor can only be set with a factory quality scan tool that reads cam offset.

Re: My s10 won't start Sign In

Cody - you can't just up and change out the whole motor as the 350 or 5.7 is the same deal. If you are running rich there should be codes. General areas could be several things but a silly temp sensor CTS right at thermostat could be telling the thing it's cold all the time and the list goes on.

Don't be looking for things to adjust. Trying to just messes it all up. Look and get codes and circuits showing faults or a professional diagnosis and if you want still do the work. You'd be shocked at what being wrong is going to cost you. Getting angry with the way it is designed isn't the approach.

All the assorted adjustments of back when got so messed up by folks who didn't know squat then so they took what you might be able to mechanically adjust to fix (usually just messed it up then too) away to make it run it's best and they do if not messed up. Tossing parts and guessing wastes time and money vs targeting the problem,

T

Re: My s10 won't start Sign In

I seriously doubt the Converter is preventing it from starting at all. There is no pressure buildup with an engine that isn't running.

Wonder how they could possibly set the offset if they couldn't get the engine to run. Dealership doesn't know how to do a back pressure test?

Re: My s10 won't start Sign In

If you are using a spark tester..........check it a 10, 20 & 40 kv. If you get a weak spark (orange) try a tester coil...........
