My car problem Sign In

Hi guys.
I have an issue with my 2.0 HDi Peugeot 407 non FAP, 2005.
Its been faultless up to the last few weeks.
Every now and again (this morning for example!) it will start, run for literally a second and then stop.
I can re start it without issue and it will run fine. Ive had it serviced recently (the problem started about a week before the service) and the mechanic said he could see no problem, but there obviously is one. It seems to coincide with the car being left for a few hours, like over night or at work during my 12 hour shift.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thank you.

Re: My car problem Sign In

All of us giving advice on this site are in the US, and there are no Peugeot sold here. As such, we have no access to technical information to this and none of us have personally seen one unless we travelled to Europe. Our advice would be general in nature but we will try to help. Is this a diesel or gasoline model? Your mechanic is probably right that he couldn't find anything wrong. When you showed up after driving it, it worked properly and when it does that everything will test out good because it is working. This is called an intermittent fault. What you may have to do is leave them the car for a few days or at least park it when they close and let them go to start it in the morning with testers in place. They need it to act up in front of them to duplicate the fault. Only when it doesn't work will parts test bad. I realize you may have trouble getting rides to put the car down that long but if its doing this now its will only get worse and eventually it simply won't start. Its actually easier for us to find out what is wrong when its wrong all the time because it will always test bad.

No problem. Do you have a spin on fuel filter? If so, when you know its been sitting long enough to act up take it off and see how much fuel is in it. A faulty check valve at the fuel inlet allows fuel to siphon back into the tank over time. The resulting air causes a hard start condition. Check it out and see what oyu can find.

We get guys from your side of the pond almost every day. We do what we can for you, but can be limiting for us as we've never seen the cars mentioned. Some things are universal and we go from there. Hope its something simple and cheap to get this back on the road for you.

Well Ive just been out to start it. Normally when it is running there is a small dribble of air bubbles in the clear pipe to the injectors. This morning I switched it on, let the glow plug light go out, gave the throttle pedal 2 pumps and it started first time. No air bubbles in the fuel delivery pipe. Random. Ill do this for the remainder of the week and hopefully it starts first time all week, and hopefully this will help pin point precisely what the issue is. Apart from the obvious Frenchness.

Mon ami, vous nourrissent il la bonne croisant et Boujouliat chaque matin ? Les voitures de france ont besoin de traitement spécial, que vous savez........

Just being a smart arse - sorry. It needs fuel without air quickly and I'm not a diesel tech but know that much,

T

PS: Give me credit - I spent HOURS frickin around with a Citroen 2CV!

French cars are a way of life ha ha. This is my third, they're like a woman. Treat them with care and you'll be ok. They do like a damn good spanking periodically too :)

And just like a car when you're tired of them you wish you could put them in a crusher and be rid of them forever.

If you're seeing air bubbles you need to go after the lines behind your lift pump. They won't show a leak because they aren't under pressure, just vacuum. Your fuel shouldn't have air in it or it will give you all kinds of hell.

Re: My car problem Sign In

Touch wood the pumping the throttle before starting it is working. Could it be purging any air out of the line or pump maybe?

Re: My car problem Sign In

It shouldn't, but I've never seen a french diesel either. Usually fuel can only move while the engine is turning, as the lift pump pushes the fuel into the injection pump.
