My TIMING belt won't get tight.... Sign In

Hello All,

I got a 1993 Honda Accura Legend C32A1 (V6), that I just put new heads on because it had blown head gaskets.

Well, Today, I was putting it all back together and I was setting the serpentine____TIMING_____ belt and It wouldn't tighten up when I tightened up the tensioner.

I, mean, the darn belt is loose and it won't tighten up...............

Anybody know a secret to make my tensioner tighten or am I going to have to get a new one.????

I know this sounds stupid, but did you make sure that you didn't get your belts switched? Wouldn't be very hard to get the alternator and compressor belts switched.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

It is the Timing belt........I backed off the tensioner; now, it--when I tighten it up--won't apply tension to the timing chain. At least I think, I can't see what it is doing.......

All I know is that the timing belt won't get tight....DARN.....ya know what that means.....

TENSIONER ADJUSTMENT
The tensioner is spring loaded to apply proper tension automatically.
Inspect belt before adjusting tension.
Always rotate crankshaft clockwise when viewed from the pulley side.
Rotating counter-clockwise may result in improper adjustment of tension.
loosen the timing belt adjusting bolt 180 degrees.
Tighten adjusting bolt to 43Nm or yes 31 ft lb.
It applies tension itself...just make sure its torqued right.

This is where the problem began:
You say, "loosen the timing belt adjusting bolt 180 degrees".

I loosened it about 10 turns. This allowed the lever arm of the spring to come off of it's post and let the
spring drop off of the post on the block......

Fixed......took the front end off and re-installed the tensioner spring and arm; reset the cam sprockets and crank sprokets on their marks....Put timing belt back on.......all done.........
motor turns over (by hand) just fine................

Thanks, Guys.............

OK, Finished.

got the engine back together, the car sounds good.
I had to replace the radiator (93 is getting brittle), and a couple hoses..

At least it don't blow anti-freeze out of the radiator..and the white steam is starting to go away, or lessen alot, coming from the tailpipe.

After a couple of starts the car wouldn't start--NO fuel. So, I had to do the Main fuel Relay "re-soder" trick with the main fuel relay Circuit board.
Car starts great now.

It does surge a little bit after it get warm, but that's just a idle control valve. That's not part of the Head Gasket Job......it needs, tie-rod (r) all belts, air filter fuel filter (leaks).
