I have a 1996 Acheiva 4 cyl that starts and then stops right away and the security light is blinking. I read somewhere here to turn the key on and leave it on for about 10 minutes until the security light stops blinking and turn it off for a few minutes. Then turn it on again at start it. I did that and it worked fine. However, it is doing it again every other time I try to use it. Is there any way I can disconnect the security system? Should I do something else? Thank you for any help you can give.

You are referring to the Passlock relearn procedure. That may or may not work. That will only work if the original failure is not present at the moment. If this doesn't work, then you will need a factory scan tool to be able to diagnose the issue. PASSLOCK 10 MINUTE RELEARN AUTO LEARN Time required, approximately 10 minutes: 1. Insure that the battery is fully charged. 2. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs. 3. Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the CRANK position attempting to start the vehicle. The vehicle will start and then stall. 4. Leave the ignition switch in the ON position while observing the security indicator. 5. When the security indicator turns off, which can take up to 10 minutes, turn the ignition switch off. Wait 10 seconds. 6. The BCM and the PCM will learn the new code on the next start attempt. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Start off with the basics.......Have your battery tested, if it comes up as even marginally good,,,,,replace it......

You mentioned a FACTORY scan tool. Who has that...a dealer?

Dealers or any well-equipped independent shop will have a scan tool capable of accessing that.

I read that the security system can be disabled by finding the yellow wire of 3 20 gage wires White, Yellow and Black going to the ignition in the column. That while running, you cut the yellow wire, then shut the car off. Then restarting and that it will restart every time. Is this possible?

That would be very wrong. The system has to be operational or the car will not run. I can give you a way to bypass the ignition sensor but the rest of the system has to be operational.

This resister has to be exact. PASSLOCK SENSOR BYPASS If you find the black wire and the yellow wire from the passlock sensor in the column you can solder in a 2.2 K (2200) ohm resistor. That means that you are going to cut those two wires and join them together with the resister. Make sure the connections are soldered\, then insulated. AUTO LEARN Time required, approximately 10 minutes: - Insure that the battery is fully charged.
- Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs.
- Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the CRANK position attempting to start the vehicle. The vehicle will start and then stall.
- Leave the ignition switch in the ON position while observing the security indicator.
- When the security indicator turns off, which can take up to 10 minutes, turn the ignition switch off. Wait 10 seconds.
- The BCM and the PCM will learn the new code on the next start attempt.

What I do on those bypasses to save time chasing down a resistor is 1st have a new key made off the old one if there is no spare (it can be the cheap non-chip key because you are bypassing the system). Cut the chip out of the old key & solder that into the harness......

There is no chip in these keys Brian. This is Passlock, not Passkey.
