Metal on metal sound near crank shaft Sign In

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. I bought it from private individual and was told it had been inspect but as it turns out it was not the case and it has a few problems. I can tackle most of the issues myself except for one that even two sets of mechanics missed until I pointed it out. There is a metal on metal sound down near the crank shaft (kinda sounds like nails on a chalk board) that only happens when the engine is hot and that the rpms are above idling. One set of mechanics say it's a seal on the crank shaft that is letting air in and causing some kind of suction, (the seals aren't leaking so I have a hard time believing that) and the others say it's originating from between the Engine and the transmission (where they connect), but they don't want to pull it apart until it gets worse as they are not sure they would be able to find the problem now if they pulled the engine and tranny apart now.

Any ideas of what the problem could be and what it could cost me?

Thanks,

A cracked flexplate/flywheel will give you noises like that.

Can you record the noise and post it in here? Something like that is going to be hard to figure out since we can't be there to hear and try to pinpoint its location.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

here's a video of the sound:

I've been told to drive the car until the sound gets worse as it only happens when the engine is hot and they are not sure they will be able to see the problem as they feel it's somewhat minor at the moment. What are your thoughts?

Still tough.
IDK - Some odd and hard to locate noises come from exhaust heat shield, gaskets or flex pipes till the really get worse. If any chance you can find those usually tapping on exhaust parts with a rubber hammer - engine cold even things like tack welds of shields let go and make some really wild noises till some fall totally off!

Reasons are exhaust must flex, things are tight in everything so either parts that must move quietly and stay intact or heat shields to keep very hot exhaust parts just aren't real strong.

Just a guess at elusive noise that can sound like things are wildly wrong and some not so hard to fix some are pricey but need to know either way,
