Major Engine Oil blow out

I need serious help!!! I have a 2004 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4 engine with engine oil cooler. We were driving downt he road when all of a sudden smoke and oil gushed out from under truck. It looks like it came from the drivers side near the oil filer area. All the engine oil pumped out like someone just gutted a pig. Fortunately, I turned engine of immediatly and did not even hear any knocking or further damage. Checking the engine oil, left nothing on the dip stick, all 6 quarts drained onto the street. I'm thinking some sort of oil cooler line blew or maybe a oil pump or sonething. Anyone have any ideas of the cause??? Any/All help muchly appreciated. Steve

The usall suspects in this event are 1) an oil filter installed with a double gasket 2) an oil filter that failed as in split a seam 3) an oil cooler line came undone 4) a drain plug came out Your gonna have to get down and dirty to find out. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

thank you for the help, I will jack up truck in the morning. I know the drain plug is in place. I will check the filter and hoses. If it is a engine oil coller hose, is that something doable in the driveway? thanks again

Unreal, first thing I checked was the oil filter. Crap there was two gaskets on it with one side blown out. How embarassing, but a cheap easy fix. I guess I got to count my blessings. Thanks for the help. Steve
