MOTOR HAS HICKUPS

1986 dodge ramcharger. 318ci. 2 bbl carb. 4x4
motor has hickups once it warms up and reaches 35-40 mph
indications told me it was the EGR valve
when I unbolted it and inspected it I noticed a crack across both holes. after research and waiting 2 days for replacement EGR valve I installed it with the # 9 washer
I need to back up here one time and tell you that there wasn't anyone and still isn't anyone that can tell me the right EGR valve that will fit my truck.there were no OEM #'s on the old EGR valve.
getting back, I took a guess at the #9 washer for it by looking at the old one and kinda matching it.
I took my truck for a test drive after the install and just when I thought it was fixed it started hickuping again.
Questions:
could I not have the right EGR valve and can you help me find the # EGR valve I need
or
do I need to chage the washer untill I get the right # washer in there for my truck....the new EGR valve came with about 10 washers with diff. numbers on them
or Could I fixed the cracked EGR valve and I have a problem somewhere else
Please help

Just some thoughts on this vintage of Chystler engine: I had a lot of issues with these with sludge not allowing proper exhaust heat thru intake manifold. Not real hard but it was fixed with taking the whole thing out and cleaning it all up. That sludge was a surprise as it was happening to cared for engines?
EGR fix: If the crack is just a crack and not sealing anything right there, there are high temp JB-weld type products that will take full exhaust heat. Good stuff but of course not as strong as uncracked metal,

i bought a new EGR valve and installed it, but wasn't sure on putting the right number washer in it. i took a ,lets say educated guess going by the size of the old one..could it be the wrong number washer? jb weld is the BOMB...i used it on my boat and it works great.i keep it with me on the boat just in case. it's a miracle worker.
as far as the slug i will wait till i can put the truck down for a day and take your advice.
i was also told i might have blown the diapham in the carb. is that possible? thank you in advance for your knowlege and advice

Diaphragm in carb could be tested with spraying carb cleaner at suspect leak and if idle reacts it probably is leaking there. What diaphragm? Choke pull-offs and a carb kit should still be available for replace these if needed,

do you think by changing the washer in the EGR valve to a bigger or smaller hole will make the difference here?

I'm trying to recall this set up and the washer thing with this. The washers must be sized for different applications for this is the best I can guess. The whole EGR concept is the blend in some exhaust gas into the incoming mixture to REDUCE combustion temps which in turn lowers NOx output - this happens at part throttle, or supposed to happen only then and not at idle or wide-open-throttle. Ones that have been plugged or don't operate can make the engine "ping" at part throttle.
The different calibrations would have some impact on operations and alter emissions but probably wouldn't give you the Hick-ups that you have. No harm in trying though. Best to use some of the high temp gasket maker on the gasket there and or some high temp grease so you can re-use the gasket if you are going to test out the different sizes.
These engines were some of the best workhorses ever made and they hung on to that block as long as possible. They (Chrysler) always had some issues with carbs and I think that's where most of your problems are. With those and the gaskets, diaphragms on anything, carb cleaner spray finds the leaks,

tom, i can't thank you enogh for you knolege. i think your right i should lean more to the carb. will buy the rebuilding kit and try that.i really think i hit the gasket thing right on with the right size washer on the EGR valve. . your right on the workhorse of the 318 ci motor. this truck has some power. i just bought it about 4 weeks ago and the kid wanted $600.00 for it. i got it for $200.00 and haven't even put $100.00 into it. had ninor things wrong to pass inspection. little rust and it hasn't run in over 1 1/2 years. he put a new battery in it and he ran it till i bought it.was a old hunting truck and boy did the inside look like it. all cleaned up now and my wife even likes it. can pull my bass boat now without asking to use someone elses truck.
