Low power, black smoke under hood, check engine - 96 Corolla Sign In

1996 Toyota Corolla, 1.8L, 277K

I pulled onto the highway to go to work this morning and immediately noticed that I had low power and the engine seemed to be running a little rough. On comes the engine light. The trooper keeps going and gets me to work like a champ, but when I pull in I also notice a nasty smell and there's a fair amount of black smoke coming from between the firewall and the engine (somewhere below the intake manifold).

The car's had a small power steering leak somewhere back there forever, which smokes sometimes when it hits the exhaust, but I've never noticed anything like this much before which makes me think it's different. I have noticed occasional black smoke out the exhaust when it first starts up lately, but never under the hood.

No code reader here at work, unfortunately, but I would sure love any help you guys could provide to narrow this down.

Thanks!

Get the codes read and post the numbers here.

Thanks for your reply!

P0302 - misfire in cylinder 2.

I'm guessing the smoke was just power steering fluid after all, as that has not yet recurred.

I changed out the plugs, and as long as the code is cleared it runs ok (though not perfect) if I don't put too much load on it. Accelerate too hard, however, and on comes the light again with the same code (same cylinder every time).

The code being cleared has no bearing on the way the car runs. You need to get to the bottom of why it is misfiring. Obviously, a spark plug isn't going to resolve it.

Plug wires and coil should be looked at closely.
