Hello people, I have a oil pressure problem, at idle after the engine has warmed to operating temperature the oil pressure in my truck is very low, but when the engine is loaded or just driving down the road at say 2000 rpm the oil pressure is fine, what could be the problem? The motor has 265,000km on it and runs good. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

what year is this vehicle and overall condition? Oil when it thins out a bit from heat will do that with somes miles on it and the engine.

If you are using 5-30 oil try up to 10-30. The engine bearings have some wear and the leakdown rate is a tad or so more than it can handle with low viscosity oil.

Also -- how low is low? Are you getting a warning light or gauge below norm limits?

Thank you for your reply. I already run 10w30, it's a '93 chevy with 265,500kms on the engine, the motor other than this is in good condition, the oil pressure gauge does not give me an actual number in psi, but if I can explain it you could probably get an idea. On my gauge from left to right it looks like this: red line (low) then another mark at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and then redline (high). When I start it up for the first time in the day the gauge sits at the 3/4 mark or slightly past it. When the engine is at operating temp. it sits at about 1/2. A few miles down the road at idle at a set of lights it will be at 1/4 or below depending on how hot the day is and how hard the engine is working (towing etc.) No codes yet, I've had this ongoing problem for a few years now, what really puzzles me is that the valves and lifters don't make any nasty noises, the truck has gobs of power for its age and other than the scary low pressure problem its in good shape. It does not burn oil or coolant, the plugs are good, wires, cap, rotor no problems, but for my piece of mind I've got to get to the bottom of this, I've been chasing this ghost for too long, learned alot in the process but have not solved the problem yet, the engine does not knock or ping either. I was just in the truck and noticed the gauge has #'s, 275kpa at 1/2 and 500kpa at max. redline. Hope this will help.Unsure
