Loud engine noise - Nissan X Train 2.2 DCI 2006

Hi,
I have a Nissan X Trail 2.2 DCI 2006 Aventura. It has done 46,000 miles.
I have just returned from my family holiday in France and yesterday, as I pulled up into a petrol station to fill up I could hear a very loud rattling noise coming from the engine. I had been towing my caravan without problems for several hours. I have noticed this only happens when it is warm, in idle or in any gear when it is below 1500 revs. As soon as I accelerate above 1500 revs the noise stops and normality resums.
Today, I went out to it and it idles from cold no problems but as soon as it warms up again it makes the noise again.
I have heard today that something called a 'Timing Chain' could be responsible but I am not sure. Can anyone please help me?

Stoney; The first order of business would be to check oil pressure. Then, a stethescope, to find where the noise is coming from. If memory serves, these engines use an oil pressure activated timing chain tensioner.

I sure you probably have but since I didn't see it, I gotta ask.
You did check you oil level & it's not overdue for service?

Hi,
Thanks for the replies gents. I know nothing about cars so checking the oil pressure, I wouldn;t know where to start. I did check the oil level though and it is fine. I also had a full service on it three weeks ago (just before I went to France).
Any further help or advice you may be able to offer I would be very grateful.

Well it looks like you've covered the basics. The next steps are pretty much what Loren has suggested. If you don't have the equipment for this it would probably be a good idea to take it in to be check. Without know the problem you could possibly make it worse by driving it.
