Loud clunk noise

I have a 1986 Toyota pick-up with a 22R engine with about 168000 miles. I know I need a new starter for sure. The problem I am having is when I start the truck I hear (occasionally) a loud clunk from the engine compartment. The engine will then stop abruptly. The noise sounds like what you would hear if you put a metal bar between the fan blades of an industrial fan while it was running.
