Leaking Coolant Sign In

My 1983 Mercedes Benz 300SD has been leaking coolant.

I replaced the water pump gasket since it looked like it was coming from there but it kept leaking so I started poking around. I found what looks like a screw hole but can't see any threads. Is the hole in the circle in the picture supposed to be there. The arrow points to the bottom of the water pump. Access is limited because it is right behind the crankshaft pulley.

Any ideas?

The hole is known as a witness hole . It is just past the water pump shaft seal . When coolant runs out of it your pump seal is bad and its time to replace the w/p.

Re: Leaking Coolant Sign In

Ahh well thanks. Easy fix if it's just the water pump.
