I have a 2006 GMC 2500 Savannah van with a 4.8 V-8 engine; 385K miles (almost all highway miles). This engine has been very well maintained, uses no oil; and runs and sounds as good as when it was new. For the past couple months; when I first start it, the oil pressure gauge reads 20-25 lbs. Once it warms up it's just fine; 50-60 lbs. NO CLACKING OR OTHER NOISES ARE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. I've changed the oil and filter (Fram) twice already but no difference. Any suggestions as to what could be causing this? Perhaps the sending unit is faulty? This makes no sense to me; I would think that the opposite would be true - high pressure when cold, low when hot. -Maize

That is a lot of miles. Oil pressure seems to be within specifications.

Specification when the engine is hot:

6 psi at 1,000 engine RPM)
18 psi at 2,000 engine RPM
24 psi at 4,000 engine RPM

Could be a gauge or sender problem. You could screw in a oil pressure gauge and confirm your readings.

?? By rights should read higher at first start up if correct readings which they may not be. I would check by separate gauge as DS suggested and also switch out oil filter to a Wix or NAPA gold (should be same) filter. I'm not pleased that manufacturers maintain their same specs anymore with any of them. Allied Signal (Fram) TMK as a company has changed hands and Wix may have too

Plenty of miles for assorted reasons. I've never seen actual lower oil pressure cold vs warm even with some really tired high mile engines,
