LOW COMPRESSION ON CYLINDER 3

Year of car: 1992 Make of vehicle: Saturn Model: SL2 Engine size: 1.9L DOHC Mileage: 123,000 16 valve engine How is everyone doing today? The spark plugs on cylinder 3, on a 1992 Saturn SL2 1.9L DOHC KEEP FOUILING OUT. At first I thought is was the valve cover gasket, so I changed the valve cover gasket. It still keep on fouling out, so I did a Wet and dry compression test. All the cylinders had 180 psi, but cylinder 3 had 28 psi. I bought the head gasket set and standard size piston rings. As soon as I took the heads off, I saw that the 2 exhaust valve on cylinder 3 was fool of carbon deposits, not closed all the way, and burned. So my main question is should I just fix the head, or should I go ahead and change the piston rings also since I already bought them? The standard size piston rings are returnable. your advice is greatly appreciated.

There is a lot more to rebuilding a block than just piston rings. I wouldn't touch the block. I agree. Don't mess with the rings unless you plan on taking the whole bottom end apart and having the block machined. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Also check for bent valve, sticky valve, or bent rod.

The reason that valve has so much carbon on it is because of all the oil you are burning, the oil control rings and the compression rings are stuck in the piston, you need to replace the rings and clean the pistons

I agree with Saturn tech on this one. Time to tear down the engine, hone out the cylinders, and put new rings in. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
