What warnings were indicated when this happened and how much water and oil were needed when you added?

This sounds like real trouble!

it was making a ticking sound and i added oil. i have a really bad oil leak and i havent had a chance to put it in, now i am regreting that. i bought the car back in october from car auction. it has 84000 original miles. i checked the oil and it was low so i added 2 quarts. the radiator i added some water not alot.

Re: Knocking sound Sign In

Did the two quarts bring it to the "full" mark or just stop the immediate bleeding? The noises are probably from lack of lubrication due to oil level too low. A red warning light should have been displayed on dash. By the time lack of oil can make noise it's life is measured in seconds to total destruction of the engine. It's not a good area to neglect and it's ower/operator responsibility to check oil level and maintain it in safe area marked on the dipstick.

Oil and the pump that puts it where it's needed is the lifeblood of an engine. With it still making knocking sounds it should be evaluated as to what the extent of damage is now and if it's worth a try to fix.

Analogy: Oil lubes an engine such that it can last for an indefinate life much like the blade of an ice skate when nice and new and sharp can last a long time when on ice which is a lubricant for the blades. Sharp ice skates would be dull in 1 foot on cement but could stay sharp indefinately when only used on good ice. Engine is like that too in its own way. No oil or oil pressure (either from lack of oil or a pump problem) its life from brand new might be less than a mile!

Have it professionally evaluated/diagnosed is the best bet now,
