My car is a 2000 Mercury Sable station wagon, with a 3.0L V6, DOHC engine. I have a burnt valve in cylinder 6. I determined that it wasn't worthwhile to pay to get it fixed by a professional, and I'm not comfortable with doing it myself. I only need the car to last another 5 months, until I go on deployment. My symptoms are: occasional (though getting more frequent) loss of power, especially at low speeds; rough idling (getting rougher), with low RPMs. My question is: What would happen if I unplugged the fuel injector and spark plug (coil packs, not distributor) for cylinder 6, and would this make the car more or less likely to die before my deployment? Also, is there anything I can do to prevent the RPMs on idle from getting too low?

What would happen if I unplugged the fuel injector and spark plug (coil packs, not distributor) for cylinder 6, and would this make the car more or less likely to die before my deployment? You definitely need to unplug the fuel injector. As for the spark plug wire, just leave it connected. You don't want to disable a coil because one coil sends spark to two cylinders. In your case 3 & 6. It won't make it die, but the engine will have no power on acceleration, and it could cause it to run a little rich on that bank because of the unused oxygen the O2 sensor picks up . As for the idle speed, it is controlled by the PCM and can't be adjusted. Too bad you can't get a good used salvage engine and slap it in there if you don't want to go through the trouble of cracking the engine open. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
