Kangarooing and spluttering '88 Golf Sign In

I wonder if anyone can help me -

My '88 Golf 1.6CL has a problem with 'kangarooing' whenever I let out the clutch or when I try to accelerate without changing down a gear. It seems to lose all power and almost stall, similar to what would happen if I was trying to set off in 3rd or 4th gear. I do manage to drive it, slowly, without this happening but any sort of quick driving is pretty much out of the question.

It runs and idles perfectly, apart from this problem which occurs under acceleration, and when it (eventually) gets to higher speeds it doesn't complain at all.

It also occasionally continues to turn over for a couple of seconds after I turn the ignition off.

I'm thinking it might be a problem with the fuel delivery? Maybe the fuel pump or a blocked line somewhere?

Any ideas would be great! Hopefully it's something I can sort out myself.

This begs a probably mute question: Are you upshifting too quickly? It still could be a host of possibilities. I just have been with some folks who were it higher gears than the speed or load on the car was wrong and the car rejected with knocking, struggling and not good for the engine, Just a thought, T

Hey thanks for the quick reply!

No, no it's not that, I know what you mean but I've had the car for about a year now, my driving hasn't changed but this has just started in the last few weeks.

It happens right through the gears, i can be doing 70mph in 5th, pull out to overtake and it will cough and bounce like I was doing 25mph. It seems to happen whenever I try to get a reasonable amount of accelleration (not being crazy, just normal driving).

But also, it will happen when I try to set off from traffic lights in 1st, if I don't nurse the clutch out really slowly.

When it's in stationary and in neutral it will rev freely without a problem, in case that makes any difference?

Ok -- from here I suggest checking fuel pressure. That and a fuel filter could hurt if you can't remember when that was replaced, T
