So I took my CRV into a local shop to have the timing belt, timing belt tensioner and waterpump replaced. Got it back and drove it home all seemed well. The next morning I started it up and it seemed a bit off, but I drove it around no problems UNTIL around noon where I went to start it up and it stalled. Once started the RPMs climbed to 1500 then dropped all the way down to zero (or so close to it). If I play the throttle I can prevent the stall from happening. On start ups where it doesn’t stall it can do one of two things..1) it revs to 1500 rpm and drops close to 0 and then moves to 500 and idles, or 2) it goes to 750 rpm and drops to 500 ish (this seems more like the norm). I took it back to the shop and the mechanic said it sounds like a vacuum problem, he found a cracked line near the PCV valve and replaced that and on my way I went. 2 hours later I go to start it up and it stalled again. I have been testing this stall process with my regular fram air filter (which is clean) and the car stalls… as well as my K&N filter which has yet to cause a stall.

NO service engine light, so no computer codes to check.

My first thought was timing is off a little bit, but if so why the intermittent problem and why isn’t it noticed at high speeds (set the cruise control at 100km/h and rpms stay constant).

What are your thoughts??

So I looked through a repair manual. Its possible that this behavior can be exhibited if the coolant level is low, or there is vapor lock in the system. Going to check that when the car has cooled down (the water pump was replaced so possible she wasnt burped enough). I disconnected the IACV while car was running and she stalled so IACV is working (might still need a cleaning). Might also be the throttle body is in need of a cleaning. If anyone can think of anything else, let me know..I will let you know how all this goes.

Don't bet on either of those things. Vapor lock is impossible in a return type system and i never heard of low coolant making a car die. It may make the IAC erratic if it has air in the coolant side but that's it.

One thing I noticed is that the air intake port that goes form the air filter to the throttle body was not on as well as it should be. When I pulled the plastic connector off there was a large amount of what I assume was dust "yellowish brown...curry powder coloration". I drive down dirt roads so figured that the TB could be clogged or dirty. Before cleaning I decided to follow the idle diagnostic flowchart in my manual. When I cover the lower port idle speed did not change (so reason to believe the fast idle thermo valve is good). When I use my finger to cover the upper, the motor stalled. I ran a good amount of throttle body cleaner through the TB and cleaned the dust out of the plastic connector pipe (the air filter housing and connector to the port was absent of this dust). I put it all back together and when I start it up the throttle doesnt drop down to 0, but maybe its 200+-50 (so this might have been the problem). If the problem persists, I may pull of the IACV and give it a cleaning (320,000 KM on this Im sure it needs to be done regardless).

You stated that the problems occurred after the timing belt change. You should take it back to the shop that did the work and have them determine what is going on. It could be off on timing which would affect fuel injector timing.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I took it back yesterday and the mechanic said he did the job right and doesnt know what the problem is. I called today, going to drop it off next wednesday to have them inspect his work and make sure things are where they should be.

Now, that's a guy I would be boiling over with confidence about.
