I have a '77 Corvette with a nasty oil leak. From what I can see, the back of the oil pan is all wet. It's worse when you are driving and open it up, the oil seems to pour onto the exhaust pipes and smokes like crazy. I am thinking the rear main seal is probably the culprit. What I'd like to do is unbolt the engine, and raise it up and try to remove the oil pan and change the rear main seal without actually pulling the entire engine from the car. Does anybody know if there is enough clearance to do this? It would sure be a heck of a lot easier this way, at least it seems so. I know, I know, sometimes the shortcuts take a lot longer than just rolling your sleeves up and going at it, but I am curious about this. Does anyone have any Vette experience who can guide me on this? Thanks.

Make sure this isn't the oil pressure switch right now. Rear main seals may require machining the crankshaft to last!
