In keeping with the rules:
1980 Chevy Chevette, 4 cly 1.6L, 109K mi

I have an 80 Chevette thats served me a good seven years. However, the last year or so it has been acting up. At first it would idle rough and die if I didn't ease the rpms down gently. Lately the choke has been sticking and after it has warmed up I have to manually disengage it to get it started. Then driving to Houston it suddenly decided that it would only provide power if the gas pedal was fully depressed, if not it would die. That problem went away by the time I got back to College Station 100 miles away. Then the other day I pull into my parking lot and am cruising in first gear with the throttle at about 1/3 and it just dies without warning, no smells, no sounds, nothing. While rolling I crank it and it doesn't start. So I drop it to 2nd and pop the clutch and it just stops the rolling.

I have checked and seen gas flowing into the carb as it is being turned over. There is also a spark and the plugs look fine. At first there was a stronger than usual gasoline smell, I removed the plugs and let it sit a few days and still no go. It defiantly is turning the flywheel, but it sounds slightly higher pitched than it used to when turning over, possibly faster than normal. I'm clearly out of my league here and don't have the money or feel like being laughed out of the shop so I must ask for your expert advise. Are the problems connected and whats it going to take to revive her?

I know the proper response to even a blown fuse on a chevette is to buy a new car, but I'm pretty attached to her. Regardless, she'll be going home for storage until I have the time and money to properly repair her. Thanks for your time and consideration.

From what you describe,the timing belt broke/stripped....needs to be replaced...
