I went on winter vacation and I school today and my car wont crank. No solenoid click or anything. It was running better then it ever was before I left from all the work i did on it. And the idea of it not cranking because of the cold doesn't make much sense to me because i remember last year i didn't drive it for about a week straight. But then again it was outside in the sunlight. Anyway i have a heat lamp on the solenoid and starter motor just to make sure. I do have full battery. oil, and gas in the tank. It just wont crank and no sound from solenoid. ANY IDEAS? UPDATE: I just tested the solenoid connection with a tester light and it is getting juice. and the ground for the battery is good!

ok i just found out that the 3 fusible links that run off the battery to the horn relay got disconnected. looks like someone somehow F**ked with my car when i was away because the extra cord coming off the negative and the fusible links were disconnected. I have found the points to connect the positive side but the thick wire coming off the negative is short and i cannot find another hanging wire where it connects. I now have accessories but my ignition is not working and looking at the schematics they are located in the same switch and if one works so should the other. However the schematics does not say anything about an extra ground wire. I tried setting it against the frame and still nothing! it must connect to something somewhere. I have NO IDEA

I have no idea what you are talking about. No, there is a small wire that goes off the battery to a horn relay that if its not connected then nothing in the car will work. trust me on that one but if you can't help it is ok. ill figure it out eventually. and i used a volt on the battery and its fully charged.

That wire is coming from the alternator and the link is after the horn relay which will be at the starter. ok, based off this schematic, if i can get accessories then i should be able to turn the crank yes? Because i think i set it up right, because i have power to all systems and full 12.9 volts but still nothing at the crank. Is it possible that just from sitting and the cold the solenoid finally called it quits. I don't know the last time that thing was changed. probably years.

That diagram doesn't tell me squat about the starter circuit. hahha maybe ill save the money and see if someone there will come take a look its kinda hard to talk electrical like this over the internet. all i know is that i'm getting power to the solenoid (tested with a light) and i'm getting power to all the lights/music/horn etc but the engine wont crank.

thanks for putting up with me man, at class today my instructor pointed everything out to me. that circuit is for accessories and ignition in the steering column! Now i understand that the starter runs of the cable directly from the battery and i know what to check because he showed me a pulled solenoid/starter motor. He told me the connect the circuit between two posts on the solenoid and it should crank just like starting if. I appreciate all the help you gave me and i will keep you posted.

When i came back from Christmas break my car starter engine/ solenoid would not crank at all. I left it so i could work on it today because it was 50 degrees out. It turned on immediately when i turned the key so i let it run thinking it was just because it was cold. Turned it off and went inside. But when i went to go somewhere the problem resumed. so I took off the starter and solenoid and brought it to autozone and it checks out. worked for them the first time. Then i cleaned my connections and put some new wire from the solenoid to coil and starter circuit. Still nothing not even a click in the starter. I am all out of ideas! can anybody help please this is my daily driver.

Connect your test light to the negative post on the battery. Touch probe of your light to the starter motor case. Have someone attempt to crank the engine. Does the light illuminate? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

i will try that tomarrow, what does it mean if it does or doesn't. i understand that it means the case is becoming positively charged from somewhere, but how would i fix this.

So, I get to be a teacher today? Basically if the light bulb illuminates when your operating the circuit (cranking the engine), it means you have a very poor ground circuit from the engine block to negative post of the battery. The starter motor case is the ground for the solenoid and the motor itself. The ground side of the motor and solenoid uses the starter motor case, engine block, and the negative cable attached to the engine block to complete the circuit back to the battery. Remember that circuit means circle. If any part of that circle is broken or has high resistance, the load (devices) won't operate properly or at all because the current cannot flow through a broken circle and any resistance in the circle other than the load will cause the available voltage to drop. Most people forget the ground side of a circuit is just as important as the power side of the circuit. TIP: Before you use your test light to check a circuit make sure the lamp is good and your light is properly grounded. Use the battery to test your light. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

i appreciate the lesson! you'd make a good teacher but a lot less money . i will try this and also got advice to tap the relay while turning the key to see if its a bad connection there. Will keep you posted but any other suggestions to try would be nice.

i will try this and also got advice to tap the relay while turning the key to see if its a bad connection there. While you have the hammer out ,instead of relay give the starter housing a firm smack. Some times the brushes stick or hang up If it starts when hit . get a starter. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

ok so after testing every possible wire connection i got frustrated and smacked the crap out of it with a hammer harder then i did last time. It worked instantly SO it was a bad brush! I bought a new starter and i never knew my car could start like that! it was amazing. It used to take half a second to start it now its like START! i believe just taking it out to get it tested moved things around and thats why it worked at autozone! THANKS ALL FOR THE HELP nd fyi there is not relay on my model.
