Idles SO fast it races................. Sign In

Hello All,

I got a 1988 Lincoln towncar with a 5.0 EFI engine. approx. 145000 miles, automatic, A/C.

My friend brought the car home a couple of weeks ago and he was complaining that the car idles reall fast.
Well, it idles so fast it sounds like it is doing 35 miles an hour.

He was told to replace the Idle Knock down Valve, He did.

The car still has a fast Idle. I looked at the car, cleaned the throttle body, checked the EGR openening(clear) etc. . .

Well, the car's idel will come down put if you press the gas it can stick at a very high idle, if you restart the car the idle will slow down; but get stuck on high if you work the gas pedel....

I sould have the book on it in a couple of days since autozone didn't have it in stock but until then maybe someone can point me in the right direction, Thanks All.......................

Did you check it good for any vacuum leaks?

Yea, I checked--generally--for cracked hoses and vacuum leaks and stuff. I did'nt see anything wrong, physically.

My friend, went ahead and got a TPS sensor from autozone for about $36.00 and we put it on the car a couple of hours ago.....Everything seems to run fine.

On initial start it runs a little fast, but steps down after a slight warm up; it don't stall at idle. I think he chanced into a fix for his problem.

I'm still making him buy the book on the 5.0 engine because if he is going to drive a 25 year old car this is not going to be the first time fixing it.

Well, Thanks for the timely reply, and once again--Thanks Hammer you are the best, buddy.......

Warm regards, Jerry

You may have stumbled on it. I'm kinda surprised it didn't set a code. It must have been partially working.

Right, he was so lucky. I usually get burned when I just throw parts at a problem...

Although, I would tap the TPS with a wrench and it would make the idle turn down.
I guess he thought that was a conclusive test and went ahead and bought a TPS.......... it might be better to be luckey than good.

THanks again Hammer.................you guys are the best.

These can have plain sticky/frayed throttle cables. If you can manually move it back toward regular idle it needs help - either lubed or replacement if that's what you find. Chance that the cable for trans is part of trouble - go easy not to break the plastic holder(s) as they are going to be hard to find new now if you dig into that or remove them.

Also make sure vacuum hose to PCV (down back) is all right and not leaking.

If you can see alignment problem it's way off or seriously some FE parts worn!
