Idle increased after throttle body cleaning. Sign In

'94 Toyota Paseo, 1.5L, 186,000 miles.

This past weekend I cleaned my throttle body (using Seafoam) to take care of a stalling problem. I also tried cleaning into the IACV hole just before the butterfly valve. It seemed to work somewhat. However my idle increased to about 1700 RPM. I used the jumper to the E1 and TE1 diagnostics, and got the idle to about 1200-1400 RPM...which is still too high.
What could have possibly gone wrong? I didn't disconnect anything other than my airbox to access the throttle body. I've checked all my vacuum lines, and everything seems to be working fine. Is it possible that my IACV is slightly stuck open, causing the high idle?

Thanks,
Joe

It's possible that the IAC is open.. try unplugging it and see if idle goes down.. Could also be a vacuum leak. I take it the idle was fine before you cleaned the TB?

I unplugged it, put some electrical jelly on it, and plugged it back in, didn't fix it. Like I said, I didn't see any signs of a vacuum leak....not saying that it is impossible, but I didn't see any signs of it.

And yes, the idle was fine beforehand....it may have even been a little low. The reason I cleaned it in the first place was because I would have to rev the car up to about 2500 RPM to get it going from a stop, or else it would stall out.

unplug it while it's running and see if idle goes down.

tried that today, and there was absolutely no change in the idle when I unplugged the IAC.

one thing I noticed is that when revving the engine, it seems to take a tiny bit longer for the RPM's to come back down from about the 2500RPM to the 1200 RPM idle. Don't know if this is related or not.

Did you disassemble anything when you did this cleaning?

No sir. the only thing I did was pop off the air intake and filter. Nothing more, nothing less.

Sure sounds like you created an air leak somewhere in the process. With that kind of mileage, you could just have a worn out throttle body that doesn't close real tight or move very smoothly any more. Try getting some penetrating oil and lubing up the throttle shafts and the throttle bore where the throttle plate makes contact and see if that lets it settle and seal a little better.

good idea. i put some on, worked it in a bit, started the car up and no dice. i put some more on, and I will let it sit for the night. it could have been my imagination, but when i pressed the top of that butterfly valve (giving a tighter seal) the idle seemed to drop just a little bit. but it could have been my imagination.

That's my point. it may be so worn that it is not seating correctly any more. Cleaning all the dirt away brought it to light.
