Hello All, Well, I had a friend roll in a couple of days ago complaining about no power steering in his (1985 Ford LTD, 3.5 Liter TBI engine). I looked in the power steering reservoir and the darn thing was empty; so, I filled it with powe steering fluid and----NOTHING. So, I went to Autozone and bought a new Power steering pump, installed in on the car and filled it with --POWER STEERING FLUID...... THe next day the reservoir was empty and no power steering......I filled it with fluid and STILL NO POWER STEERING.....I think I got a leak!!!.....what the heck? Did the pump burn up that fast??? I had a couple of people tell me that the 1985 power steering pumps use Dexron II ATF fluid NOT power steering fluid.....what the heck???? Oh Well......................

Is this a Crown Vic, Wagon, Country Squire, or mid size LTD? Never heard of a 3.5L in an older Ford. Unless you stuck an EcoBoost in it...LOL. It has to be leaking somewhere. Inspect all the hoses and the power steering rack or gear box. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

No, it is a 1985 LTD 3.5 TBI....That's it.....4 door sedan...................... I was wondering what was making the power steering pumps fail??? NO fluid makes them burn up? soon, later, quickly?? I put more fluid in the resevoir but the pump wouldn't start working after that, i.e. more fluid.

No fluid in them will burn the pump up. Don't know how long a pump would take to go south with no fluid in it. Never ran that sort of test to find out. If you keep having to add fluid, there has to be a leak somewhere. If there is a leak, there is probably air in the system, so the pump won't put out any pressure until the air is out of the system. Can't get air out of the system if the fluid is leaking out somewhere. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

The only V6 they ever put in the midsize LTD was the 3.8. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

OK, but it does--the pump--take power steering fluid and not Dexron II, right???? Even if the pump for a 1985 was built in 2012....it takes power steering fluid................ And, it has rack and pinion up front so we bleed the system like brakes????

You can use either one. They have the same make-up.

That is the thing, your not going to get the air bled out if the system has a leak. You have to figure out where the fluid is leaking out of or where air is being sucked in if your fluid is all foamy. You don't crack lines open on a power steering system to bleed it like you would with a brake system. The air is purged out as the fluid flows around in the system while the pump shaft is turning and you turn the steering wheel lock to lock. You have to make sure the fluid doesn't get low causing the pump to suck in air from the reservoir when you first start the engine after adding fluid to the reservoir. As the air is purged out, you add more fluid. If the fluid is all foamy, it's full of air or air is getting in somewhere in the system. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
