2004 Hyundai Elantra. In the morning when it is below freezing car idols rough, and when it's really cold seems to run on only 3 cylinders. One morning when it was above freezing car run just fine. After you run the car a few miles and let it sit for a bit, it purrs like a kitten. Check engine light came on blinking then stayed on. Steve

Hi Tom, My problem is I live out in the sticks, I have to drive about 150 miles to get the code read, and the car will be warmed up and running fine when I get there. On the phone the guy said the code may only give them a general idea, but if the car is running fine, it may be tough to fix and the trip may be a waste. Any idea of what I should do? Steve

You don't have many options. If you are not equipped to do any testing where you are located, then you are going to have to make arrangements to leave it at a shop. You can't just "wing it" with no testing. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

As HT just said - not many options and a reading will at least give a direction to aim for trouble. Your original post says runs OK when warmed up. If you want to guess try a CTS. Running this car is no doubt wrecking cat/convert(s) so you'll think 150 miles is nothing but enough to cause harm too. 150 miles from anywhere! I can't fix that, T

The check engine light is blinking. that indicates a severe misfire bad enough to ruin a Cat if driven that way. You need the codes to find out which cylinders is missing and they you will have to do some diagnostics to determine why.

I'm not sure of the mileage on this but if there is any overdue maintenance items (any tune up stuff)on the car, this would be a perfect time to get that done. It's something that needs to be done anyway and you never know, you might just get lucky & kill 2 birds with one stone... My plan B would be......move to Hawaii....problem solved....
