All,
My 1999 Hyundai Elantra is having problems. It has lost all acceleration and when cold, will not hardly get up and go at all. The "check engine" light starts flashing in the middle of trying to accelerate, and the engines misses and sputters.
I think it is one of the sensors, but have no idea what to look for.

Easiest place to start would be to check fuel pressure.. you may have enough pressure to run at low rpm's but not enough at high rpm's under a load
engine light flashing due to the missfiring

A friend thinks it is the EGR valve/sensor or something like that. Actually I think you thought I loose at high speed when it is crawling, sputtering through intersections as 2-5 mph and missing signal lights that has me concerned. Problem is much worse when the engine or car is cold. Car accelerates well above 40mph, unless I really tromp on it, so highway traffic is fine. Any accessive "foot" in the accelerator shuts it down. I have to rock the accelerator to get going and if I happen to be on a hill going up and get stopped I'm in trouble. Actually the break over in operation of the engine is between 35-40 mph based on whether I am accelerating on the level, downhill, or uphill, but once the break over point is reached the car lunges into action and starts working right. I used to have all the manuals for the car, then it was stolen and the thieves took my manuals, so will need links to online manuals to locate anything under the hood. Course I've checked and replaced the plugs, wires, etc to no avail. Thinking about locating all the sensors, one by one, by following the wiring pulling each and cleaning, as maybe that will help. As zmane stated, a blinking check engine light indicates a misfire condition. Of course, there are a multitude of reasons that can cause a misfire. From your symptoms, it sounds like it is overfueling. By feathering the throttle, you aren't giving it more fuel, you are giving it more air. Shouldn't be called a gas pedal. Should be called an air pedal. Pull the spark plugs and take a look for fouling.

I think everyone is reading too fast, because you missed the part where I said I replaced the plugs and wires.
Also I know it is a sensor/computer issue as symptoms are those of an older car with timing advance/retard issues.
Car idles and runs fine above 2K RPM, but misses like crazy below that, which means the sensor or computer ckt that retards spark, when at lower speeds is not functioning correctly, so the erratic firing, sputtering and bucking, and thus no power or acceleration.
On highway car is fine, so just need to fix this lower RPM issue.

Uh, there are other things that will cause a misfire besides spark plugs and wires.  Retarded or advanced timing won't cause a misfire unless the timing is waaayyy off. When's the last time you had the injectors cleaned? (and I'm not talking about the snake oil one puts in the gas tank) Or, a fuel filter replaced? A lean condition can cause a miss, whether it be from a partially plugged or faulty injector, or a restricted fuel filter. Have you had it scanned for codes? A knock sensor can cause timing to retard, but wouldn't explain the misfire. Hyundai's have a problem with coils, also.

blinking engine light means your cat is burning up so maybe you have a plugged cat that would cause poor acc and fine idle and the engine light

All,
New coils and a tune up fixed it. Mostly the coils. Found out these dual coils are problematic.
