High engine speed at idle/Park Sign In

I have a 1997 Dodge Intrepid which recently developed a high RPM at startup and when putting transmission into Park Normally, the car would idle at around 500-700 rpm, but now it races to 1500-2000 rpm when you put it into Park, or start it up when the engine is warm. This started the day before yesterday and now on the the way to work this morning, the Check Engine light came on. I also noted some speed fluctuations during highway driving last night without adjusting gas pedal pressure.

I am wondering if this is engine related or transmission related?

Start with getting the computer scanned. Let's find out which code has been set which caused the MIL to come on.

I have a similar problem with a 2000 Chevy Malibu see here --> http://autoforums.carjunky.com/...ccelleration_P12475/

I'm not sure it's a TPS problem though... I have a new TPS in it, yet the problem persists, and my car experiences the same symptons.
