Help me with siezed engine! Ideas and Advice please Sign In

Hey guys,

The basic info:

I have a 1990 Pont. lemans 1.6L I4 (manual) with 150K miles. It is my father-in-law's car and he really needs it to get around. He is disabled and needs to get to medical appointments and other stuff. He can not afford a new car or even a used car. He asked me to try and break it loose for him.

What the car is doing:
Obviously, its a no start condition. When you try to start it, it makes and loud click noise. I thought it was the starter and pulled it. It failed the test and I got a new one. I put the new starter on and then it made the same sound. I went to check the the timing and found that the crankshaft pulley cannot move. It can move forward and backward like a 1/4 inch and makes a loud metal hitting metal sound. I tried using a breaker bar and nothing. I think its siezed but not at the piston rings. I put PB blaster, and Marvel Mystery Oil in the spark plug holes and have let it soak for 1 week.

So my question to everyone is what is the next best step? Do I take the oil pan off and check the rods? Do I take the top off and use a wooden block and hammer on the pistons? ANY ADVICE would be great. He really needs it fixed so please help me. Thank you. ps. i have tried turning it in gear and in neutral.

You're wasting your time. That motor is toast. All the PB Blaster in the world isn't going to fix that engine. You can put a motor in it or you can call the junkyard. Those are about your only 2 choices.

Did it just lock up out of the blue or had it been sitting for awhile? Sounds to me like the only fix is to tear apart the engine. If it seized up something is definitely wrong and I wouldn't think trying to reverse the effect is going to do anything except possibly cause more damage. The real mechanics will be around and will point you in the right direction.

no it seized while running. It was driven to the gas station and died quietly. no pop, no noise, no smoke, nothing. It was like a stall but wouldnt turn back over. I got it towed home and found out the crankshaft was seized. Im thinking about taking the oil pan off and see if i can see the problem from there. thank you.

ps i was Army. when did u serve?

The junkyard is not an option yet. and a new motor is pricey so i am trying to avoid it at all costs but you might be right. Do you where I can get a cheap and decent engine? Thanks

Some won't make much noise......It's in the "died quietly"....what caused it to die....

This engine should be able to be turned over by hand with a breaker bar......To be sure pull the plugs,,,,,it you still can't turn it over,,,,take all the belts off and try to turn it over......then it's not looking good.....Next step would be to unbolt torque converter and see if it will turn over....then you're pulling the pan....

Once you get to the converter & pulling the pan......It's not going to be cheap.........barring divine intervention
