HELP 95 escort idling problems

I have a 95 escort and it has been running fine, except last week, it started to idle funny at stops and such. I took it in to a mechanic and he looked at it and cleaned the iac and everything, but it still runs bad. Basically it will run fine for a while(an hour or a day or whatever) and then all of a sudden at a stop sign, the rpms will jump up and down really quick(from like 1200-800) or it will go up to 1500 and then down to 0 pretty much. It has died a few times while stopped. I thought that it had something to do with the a/c cause it usually happens when that is on, but it has been doing it every now and then without the a/c on. I went out to autozone and got a new iac valve and put that on and it is still doing it just as bad. The mechanic said it might be an iac motor that needs to be replaced, but thats like $100 plus install. Anyways if anyone can help that would be great.
