Hi all i have a 1988 Mitsubishi Canter 2 tonne diesel truck which when you turn the key to start it it makes a grinding sound and dosent start and then turn the key and away she goes. Ive had the starter looked at and it is ok. What else could it be? Thinking a flywheel problem???????? Thanks Stuart

Don't let it grind. It probably has a tooth or two missing or worn. Engines stop in generally just three different spots. If it does it all the time I'd be inclined to blame the starter gear. If a standard trans just nudge the veh while off in gear and you would get a better tooth on the flywheel. That's just a bail out no the fix. The fix will be a new gear, starter or called ring gear in automatics, T

Hi Tom Thanks for the reply. Had the crankshaft replaced a few months ago due to it breaking but that was several months ago.Could it be connected to the current problem now? Its a manual by the way. Sounds like its off to the mechanics again Thanks again Stuart

If it worked properly right away and then this it's likely the problem came from the crankshaft job but will be hard to prove. Give it a try though and I will remain steadfast that most mechanics are honest and will be able and should tell you if this was their fault. We all make mistakes -- the answer is to own up to them, T

Hi again Tom Thanks for the advice again. If it is connected im not going to push the issue with them as they are the ones that if my truck needs repair they have it back on the road next day 99% of the time because thats my living. They stuck to their quote for the crankshaft replacement even though it was a few hundred dollars more in costs than they quoted and that was a handshake quote. Honest without question. Thanks once again Stuart

Hi, Stick with the folks that are good to you. Take care of them and surely they will take care of you. When you have good repore with a shop you are golden. Was just thinking about this and a starter problem could have been caused by the crankshaft depending on how it failed, T
