Green Eggs and Dragging Start....Suess Anyone? Sign In

Ok...I have a little 1999 Ford Escort..Been Great..No problems....Until a few weeks ago...Alternator went..Drained the Battery...Broke Down..Replaced Alternator...Charged Battery..Bada Bing..I'm Driving again..

Then...

Recently the car has had issues Starting...It will drag..for a few minutes..till it will finally start..The other day..my windshield wipers were moving slower than normal..and Today...The Car wouldn't even turn over...I jumped it and it started up and ran..So I'm assuming the Battery Has gone bad...I mean it's an '07 Battery..maybe it's time..and I imagine draining it with the failed alternator didn't help..

ALSO...Yesterday in Traffic..We started getting a pleasant Rotten Egg smell from the AC..and it is suprisingly persistent..Doesn't happen always..but it does happen often.

I've heard a few things cause this..Bad/Leaking Cat...Fuel injection Problems...Mold/Milder in AC condenser...But I have also heard it's a classic sign of an Overcharged Battery/Bad Batter Cell

So is it safe to assume the two issues are connected?...And Fixing the Battery Issue will rid me of the Eggs?...But what is an "Overcharged Battery"...i mean..Bad Cell..I get that..But replacing the battery won't fix overcharging will it?..Would that be an alternator issue?..I mean..It's Brand new...

Any Ideas?

Well P0E2005 , I am sure you probably need at least somewhat of an answer to your question before you go out and buy a $90.00 Battery, and seeing as your car is dead in the water, it would be best to provide you with a timely response!

I mean that IS what this Forum is ALL about right? Providing Helpless people lik you with knowledge when you need it, I mean. Hammertime is Great at it!

Yes, the Rotten Egg smell is most likely a bad battery cell creating a sulfur smell, which is Surely the cause of your poor Start. Even though both the Smell and Bad Start could be indicative of Fuel Injection Issues, I believe this is your problem seeing as you had previously put a lot of strain on a relatively older battery when the Alternator Failed.

Good Luck my Friend!

WOW Thanks P0E2005,

I'm sure glad you responded so quickly to my dire situation. This sure is the bestest car repair forum on the net! And yes, I have had encounters with Hammertime in the past and He is Swell!

I went right out and Bought the Battery Just like you said and it corrected all issues! Thanks for letting me know your Opinion, because Spending $90.00 without knowing if it would even help the problem...well that would just be crazy!

Thanks Again CarJunky.com!

You should have been able to track the smell right to the battery. It may even have been smoking a little when charging.

I actually wasn't getting any smoke....

Everyone kept saying.."Mold in the Condenser, Mold, Mold, Mold"....

But I mean...Mold wouldn't just BAM and you can't breathe one day while in traffic...

It all worked out...With THAT car anyway...I swear cars hate me.

Mildew in air conditioners usually only smells when first turned on and even then the smell wouldn't be confused with a cooking battery.
