Golf S 2004 Engine Cut Out Sign In

Hi guys

hoping if someone could help me, 2 weeks ago we went into town and on the way home our Volkswagon Golf S 2004 cut out on us in the car park it was a struggle to get home and in the end had to call out break down cover.

The issue is the car was driving ok then all of a sudden it cut out the revs would drop and sometimes the engine would become responsive again but other times it would cut out like (stalling the car)

So the breakdown cover came and plugged his machine into the car computer and it came up with Fuel Pump Error.

The mechanic we know has changed the fuel pump relay said it started up ok and when he went to move it the engine cut out again like theres not enough fuel going to the engine

He said the fuel pump is doing what it should and cant put his finger on the problem.

He knows some friend of his who is a auto mechanic deals with electrics or something but charges something ridiclious like £110 an hour

has anyone else had any similiar issue and maybe to point out what the problem maybe ?

I understand the car is pretty old now and things are going to break as its never had any issues apart from now so its wear and tear

but i really cannot afford to pay out over £110 per hour

You need to first measure the fuel pressure at the rail. If the pressure is inadequate you would need to the check for proper power and ground connection at the fuel pump itself. If the electrical supply is good you would then have verified a bad fuel pump and would need to replace it and the fuel filter. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge and a multimeter?
