Fuel Injection & Throttle Body Cleaning? Sign In

Greetings!

A shop has recommended that -- in addition to the need to replace #3 ignition coil and spark plugs -- the fuel injection system and throttle body should be cleaned. This recommendation, I was told, was because of accumulated dirt.

Over the years I have heard opposing ideas about such a cleaning ... one says that it's a "good thing to do" and the other says it is irrelevant and a waste of money.

So, wise community, I wonder what your opinion is?

And who told you it was a waste of money....Billy Bob down the street with his adjustable wrench and hammer.

Yes, injectors build up varnish on the inside of the spray nozzles and can lead to misfires and piston damage.

The idle speed is controlled by metering of very small amounts of air around the throttle plates. The oil fumes that are reburned through the breather and PCV cause a buildup of crud on the backside of the throttle plate and the inside bore of the throttle body. This prevents the throttle plate from seating in the closed position and letting in unregulated air which leads to unstable idle speeds and intermittent stalling.

So, yes this maintenance is important.

You're welcome.

You never mention your mileage but these things wouldn't be needed until over 50K at least.
