We're dealing with a 1987 Z28 Camaro that has been highly modified by previous owners, however where one previous owner seemed to know what they were doing, the last owner obviously didn't. This car has been "frankensteined" with a crappy exhaust and various other cheap tricks.

We know that it is running a carburated Chevy 350 with a 600cfm 4-barrel, shorty headers, 3:73 POSI in the rear, 350 Turbo tranny, and various other things, however we are having a chore of a time trying to get the monster's Flywheel replaced. It's been eating starters like nobodies business, and we found it was missing at least 10 teeth from the flywheel itself.

However, one mechanic told us that despite the flywheel (168 tooth pattern I believe) would only need 3 bolts to be properly installed, though it has a bolt pattern for 6, and another says that it needs all 6 so it won't warp like it's current one has.

Who is right here? What is the proper way to install this flywheel? 3 or 6?

Generally, this is a Ford house, so working on this bad boy has been quite the learning experience. We are still trying to ID exactly what engine the thing has, we know it was more then likely an eldebroch racing crate rebuild, everything is eldebroch under the hood, however the only numbers we could pull from the block don't match anything that I have been able to find. Needless to say, we are discovering all sorts of things that were half done, or not done at all with this machine.

Any help would be wonderful, as we are trying to iron out this car and fix the previous owners failings...and there are a lot. The exhaust modified to run side pipes that only allow about 1ΒΌ inch clearence between them and the starter for instance...

Attached is a photo of the engine...maybe you can help us ID the thing? Let me know if I can provide you with any additional info. Thanks Guys. =)

I don't buy that using just three of six bolts will help anything. You could hunt down just a ring for the "flywheel" or just get a whole one. Starter is probably too tight and should be shimmed down a bit away from the ring gear,

Hey, if it has six bolt holes, use 'em. Some mechaincs use their own tuition about stuff like that, and usually it's incorrect.
It's kinda like using 2 lug nuts on a 4 lug setup ... it probably will get you home or to a store to get 2 more, but it NEEDS all of 'em.
I hope this helps in some way,
