Ford Laser engine cuts out Sign In

My daughter has a 2001 Ford Laser that has an engine cutting out problem (it has a 4 cylinder engine and has probably done at least 150,000 km). It ran well when she bought it about 18 months ago but then on a long highway trip (she lives in country Victoria) the engine stopped. After a short while she was able to restart and finish her journey. Since then this has happened intermittently many times. She has had the car checked and tuned but the same problem has reoccurred. The car is presently with the mechanic she bought it from and he has spent considerable time trying to locate the problem, even taking the car home himself and experiencing the same problem. The cutting out now seems to be happening more frequently after much less distance travelled. I imagine that the obvious remedies have already been tried but I'm not sure.
Your suggestions would be appreciated, especially as she is presently using one of our cars!
Thanks,
Peter

It's an intermittent failure and the only way anyone is going to be able to find the problem is to run tests on the car at the moment the problem is present.

Yep, the problem needs to occur long enough to catch the glitch.

Monitoring fuel pressure with a gauge to see if the pump shuts off.

4 channel scope is helpful because you can record crank and cam sensor signals, coil primary trigger, and ignition voltage at the PCM. See what is glitching out to give you an idea where the problem may be lurking.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Thanks for your responses. I will pass them on.
