Ford F250 Turbo bad? Waste gate? Sign In

2004, Ford F250, 6.0 Diesel. 150000 Mi.
I have been told the Turbo is bad. I have also been told that the turbo gets replaced when the real problem is the waste gate. How could I determine for sure what is actually bad. A new turbo and waste gate is quite expensive. Maybe a used one would be ok. What do you all think?

main problem with the turbo is people drive them to lightly and build rust on on veins another common problem is people run them to hard bring the temp up then stop and shut the truck off.. oil is used to cool the turbo when you shut the truck off when turbo is hot heats up the oil and takes out the seals..

good practice if your pulling or hauling is the let the truck idle 15 mins after stopping to cool the turbo.

Not good idea to buy used since they may have been abused, not used in long time(dried seals, and or corrosion) and no warranty(usally). Your further ahead to buy a new turbo. I have rebuilt a few turbos but they don't seem to last as long with the parts they give you and it's same price if you factor in labour.
