I have a 1996 1.6l Ford Escort. Everything was working fine until a few weeks ago when the muffler started to make some noise. Had it checked and was told the entire assembly has to be replaced. I made arrangement to do it but had to drive the car in the mean time. There was a real pick up problem (no acceleration) and after a while when I came to a stop, it died, but would start back up right away with no problem. The next morning I went out and the car would not start. I thought the sluggishness may be due to a clogged fuel filter so I changed that and then also change the spark plugs. I have looked at the air filter and it looked fine. I also checked the sensor off the filer, cleaned out some back carbon but not really dirty. Then tried to start the car and after a number of times of just starter, then the engine trying to turn over to finally, the engine turned over and the car ran. I was able to drive it around a bit, came back and parked it. The next morning, it wouldn’t start. Any thoughts what could be the culprit? Could the leak in the exhaust, up under the manifold, be causing the problem? I need the car for my work but the garage can’t take me for another week so I would appreciate any suggestions. PS I just took off the ICV and cleaned it, no difference. Thanks very much.

A big time restriction in your exhaust, since your having problems with it, could cause those symptoms. Back pressure test while cranking should be able to tell you if you have a major restriction or you can disconnect the exhaust at the down pipe to see if the engine will fire up. If the exhaust isn't the cause of your problem, your going to have to test fuel pressure using a gauge. Low or no fuel pressure can cause no starts and loss of power. Did you see if there are any trouble codes stored in the engine computer? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

You need to fix the known problem before looking for any more. You already know you have an issue with the exhaust and you're trying to look around it and that's not the way to do things. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
