1998
Ford Escort ZX2
2.0L
136,000 miles

I have a problem with the fuel pump intermittently not priming. I have changed out the Fuel Pump Driver Module and redone the grounds located on the firewall close to the battery. I usually have to cycle the ignition multiple times for the fuel pump to prime. When it does not prime the motor while just crank and not start. I am getting power on the wires coming off the module going to the pump (BLU/BLK and BLU/WHT). I understand that the pump is variable speed. Whatever the issue is, the car does not die out or anything while driving. I have not changed out the fuel pump yet.

I am stumped on this one. Any help would be appreciated.

You really need a bidirectional scan tool to diagnose this system. You don't even have a service port for testing the pressure. You have to read it on the scan tool. The tool will alllow you to manually induce the duty cycle and increase it as necessary while watching the rail pressure sensor to see what it is producing.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge connected to verify the pump has a priming issue?

I do not have a gauge connected. The reason I know it's not priming is because I don't hear it prime. When I hear it prime the car starts up. I have the back seat taken out so I can listen for the pump.

When it doesn't prime is when you need to see if you have power and ground at the pump from the fuel pump module.

Watch parts 1 and 2 of this video. You'll get some good tips diagnosing this thing.
