First time engine rebuild help

I plan on doing a rebuild in my car as the piston rings are on there way out as I'm getting quiet alot of blow by from not looking after my car and thrashing it.
question is does the cylinder bore have to be re skimmed? or honed?
or can i just replace the old rings with new standard rings and put it back in.
anything else I need to know? (i have access to ring compressors), should i replace the bearings while I'm at it?
I've never done a rebuild before and this will be my first, and please don't recommend me not doing it cause i'm gonna do it either way, cause that's what other people said about doing my clutch without a transmission jack and that turned out fine.
Gota learn someway right?

1st things 1st....
HT I ain't buying that statement, you have more than enough experience to rebuild an engine but I get your drift & see where you're going........
Curtains....... You're right, everyone ones gotta learn somewhere but there is no way you can compare R&Ring a clutch to rebuilding an engine. Those are both at completely differently levels of experience.....
I appreciate your honesty about your experience level. This is just to complex of job to even attempt to help someone do over the internet, let alone someone with little experience..
The best advise I can give you is buy a one car subscription to Alldata and read up on this....The 2 questions you asked doesn't even begin to scratch the surface on what needs to be done and honestly not trying to be mean but if you really did have enough experience to do this you would already know the answesr to those questions.....
What I would suggest since you were able to do a clutch on this vehicle with "no problems" would be to find a place that offers warranties on their used motors and just do an engine swap. It might be a little more expensive but you'll be on the road way faster. Here there are a couple of places that will actually swap the motor for you if the 1st one they sell is bad, beats having to do it again......check around....
What kind of car is this anyway?
I just saw that you're in N Z so Alldata would be out of the question. I would go with the engine swap but if you're determined to do this, find a good manual.

Rebuilding an engine correctly requires a ton of specialized measuring equipment and machinist knowledge and experience. He has no idea how to measure tolerances or even what is acceptable. He can't even recognize whether his block is a rebuild able core or not.
If he thinks this is just a matter of bolting something together, he's in for a real shock and let down when it doesn't turn out the way expected but he has made it clear that he will be stubborn so we'll see if he gets the last laugh this time.
PS, the jury is still out on whether the clutch was done properly and will have no problems in the future. If it turns into a chatter box down the road, we will know why.

Well thanks for the help guys, I guess I'll have to find more info from else where.
I'm not worried about the engine blowing up or the rebuild going wrong. I'll let u know how it goes.

sorry,
just a 97 Toyota Corolla Levin BZ-G Black top 20v engine.
Won't be doing it for another while, still need to collect alot more info before I attempt.
Not really worth buying a motor form somewhere that offers warranties as that'll cost more than what my cars worth.
As for the clutch, I'll let you know if it fails on me, but so far so good.

My first rebuild I did with a chilton book and a good machine shop. took some shortcuts and it failed. second one i took some shortcuts to save a little money and it failed. third time no short cuts everything new, machined and balanced. One of my mistakes was litening to a freind who built dozens of engines and had many failures. I shut myself in my garage turned off the phone, threw his hoist in the yard, took the day off work. It is still going strong with 150000 miles. HIPO 302 60 over.. I am very proud.

get a block and start building it. when its finished just swap in a couple hours. minimum time down. All pistons and rods go back in the same holes, very important
