I have a 2006 Mercury Milan, however, the engine was replaced in it about 6 months ago. Recently the car is jumping and misfiring when in idle. I am guessing it's the spark plugs however, I'm not familiar with this engine or even what type of car it came from. Is there a way to find out what type of car the engine came from? It looks totally different from the engine that was in it. I can't go to the garage to find out what he replaced it with because since then the garage has shut down.

There is one of only two engines of that year that could be in it. It's either a 2.3L 4 cylinder or a 3.0L v-6. You never mentioned what engine the vehicle came equipped with from the factory. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

It was a 2.3L 4 cylinder. The actual engine looks completely different from what was originally in it. I looked how to change spark plugs in a 2006 Milan, and nothing on the engine in it is even close to how the "how to" says. UGH! ha

Can you post a picture of the engine that is in it? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Absolutely, here it is. I guess my main question is, how in the heck do I change the spark plugs in this engine? I'm trying to get away with doing this myself. ha.

That looks like the correct engine in the picture. Really there is no way you would get another engine of a different type to work in your vehicle without some major modifications. If your looking for the spark plugs, you have to remove the four ignition coils and that piece of duct work on top of the engine. Ok thanks! On that ductwork, it looks like there is a top and bottom piece, when you say remove, do you mean just remove that top half, or remove the entire piece of ductwork? How hard is it to change these? I need to learn this, ha. Another really dumb question, how many spark plugs are there? I figure since there are 4 coils, that means 4 plugs?

You probably have to remove the entire ductwork that is covering the 4th coil. Your right there are 4 spark plugs recessed down inside holes in to the top of the cylinder head. You'll see the top of the plugs when you remove coils. Make sure that you install the correct plugs and they are torqued to 9 ft lbs. Do this when the engine is cold. When you get the coils out, look down in the holes and make sure you don't see any engine oil. Excellent! Thanks! One more question... how do I know how to torque to 9 ft lbs. I know I should have a mechanic do this, but I'm determined!

Ok. So I opened another thread about this engine which I didn't know I couldn't do. But here's what my situation is... I'm beginning to wonder if they spark plugs are even the issue. About 4 days ago I noticed that when in idle my 2006 Mercury Milan (automatic) was sounding like it was going to shut off while sitting at a stop sign. When I pulled out the car shifted with a jerk at lower gears. It eventually stopped and did not do it again the rest of the trip. However, the next day I was sitting in my parking lot and when it was in idle, after about a minute of being on, it started jumping and sounding like it was going to shut off. I opened the hood and noticed the engine was jumping slightly, I walked around the back of the car and the exhaust was sounding gargly as well. When I pulled out it jerked again slightly when it shifted around 25 mph but didn't do it again, just once that trip. Got to the store and came out, turned it back on and it did not do anything this time, but when I got home, I put it in park and it started to jump again. I asked a few of my friends that certainly aren't mechanics but they all said it sounds like it may be either spark plugs and or the oxygen sensor.

Is the check engine light on or has it been on while the engine was running? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

The engine light came on literally at the exact same time the engine started acting weird.

That light came on because the computer that controls the engine detected a problem. When the light comes on like that, the computer is storing one or more trouble codes in its memory. You need to have a scan tool or code reader to retrieve these codes. The code(s) may be a piece of the puzzle to figuring out what is going on. Places like Autozone can scan your computer for free to tell you what codes are being stored. Make sure that you write down the code numbers if you go that route. Don't let them clear the codes from memory in case you can't figure out your problem. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

OK I'll do that. About 2 months ago my engine light came on... took it to a garage and he said the code read O2 sensor but that it was probably my gas cap or the gas I was using. I added a fuel cleaner and the light went off. But this time its on with those additional problems. Where's the O2 sensor on this car?

There are two O2 sensors and they are both screwed into the exhaust. One is before the catalyst and the other is after it. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Awesome. I read somewhere that it's usually the one before the cat. converter that is the one to change... Do you think cleaning anything might help? You've been a huge help.

You can't clean an o2 sensor because there is a metal shroud over the tip of it that protects and channels the exhaust gases over the working end of the sensor. The sensor itself is fragile and doesn't tolerate being cleaned with chemicals or such. If the sensor is found to be faulty, it needs to be replaced. It is also important to determine why a sensor failed, because if something contaminated it, you don't want your new sensor becoming contaminated. You really should see what code(s) are being stored in the computer before getting ahead of yourself. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I live in a very rural area, 2 garages to choose from, the one charges 36 dollars to scan it, the other guy doesn't have a scanner. UGH! I'm afraid to drive the dang thing the 30 minute drive to Autozone, so, I'll have to scrub up the 36 bucks, or maybe go to Walmart and buy my own? Either way, I have a list of what codes mean. Btw, do you know of any websites that have an engine diagram that shows what each part on my engine would be?
