Fiat Marea 1.8ELX shuts down in right turns, but ONLY WHEN ENGINE IS COLD Sign In

Dear engine lovers!

I drive a Fiat Marea 1.8ELX Weekend, 1999. Petrol+LPG and have a bizarre problem that no mechanic was able to tackle in the past two months.

My Marea starts perfectly, and runs perfectly, except when in a right hand turn, then it shuts down. But only when the engine is still cold - it works perfectly when the temperature gauge shows even the slightest temperature rise. Up, down, left, straigth - works like a charm. Right turn - shuts off, when i pass the turn on inertia, simply continues working normaly, doesn't even 'start up', simply -works!

It is only a problem in the cold days (below 11°C). If I start the car, and let it run for 3-4 min, and then go - works like a champ. The issue is repeatable both on LPG and petrol.

Any ideas?

Thanks, good people.

There is only one way to get to the bottom of this issue. You have to rig up a way to monitor fuel pressure, spark and injector pulse that you can observe while driving the car through this problem to find out which one of the functions is dropping out. It may sound hard but that's the way we have to diagnose it.

Thank you so much for the answer.

Yeah, I suggested something like that to my Fiat dealer, but he called me a nuttcase that 'wants to do his job (that he ahsn't been doing for 2 months - I'm guessing he doesn't like the hastle)

So, would yo be able to decsribe the procedure with two-three more sentences? So I can come educated back to the mechanic and suggest it...

It's basic diagnostics 101. If the engine stops running, one or more of those functions has dropped out and the tech has to find a way to determine which one and that will narrow things down dramatically. The actual techs already know that but likely don't want to spend the time doing it because they get paid by the job, not by the hour. The guy you are dealing with is likely just a service writer (salesman) and really has no idea how it's actually done.
