Explorer won't start anymore! Sign In

1994 Ford Explorer Limited 4.0L 80000km (new Ford crate motor put in a couple of years ago). Hello, this has been a problem that has become progressively worse. A few months back my explorer would backfire while on the highway, so we ended up changing the intake gasket which didn't solve the problem, we replaced fuel relays, changed the fuel filter and tested the fuel pump which was sitting at 35psi and it turned out there were faulty spark plugs causing the problem, so we got Ford plugs and I haven't had any more problems. Then about a month or so ago, the truck had a hard time starting and I ended up killing the battery, so after I replaced it, first thing in the morning it would have a hard time starting and then sometimes it would backfire or just run rough for a few seconds, so I would stop cranking and the next time I turned it over it would start and run rough for a few moments. It would start fine all day but once it sat overnight the same problem would happen again. Also, if I shut the truck off and start it again a few minutes later, it appears that it is running rich as there is a lot of exhaust smoke and there is an odour to it that doesn't smell like a vehicle when it first starts for a few seconds and upon looking under the hood I am not losing any coolant or oil so it leads me to believe it is excess fuel that I am burning off. This morning when I went to start it, it backfired but this time it wouldn't start at all.

I could be wrong but 35psi sounds a little bit low..,I think it should be more like 40-50psi.
Zmame on here is a ford guy he should know 100%.
Is the exhaust smoke black, blue,or white?
If it's white and smells kinda sweet then that could be the head gasket.
Black means it's getting to much fuel.
Blue means it's burning oil.

Exhaust is white but I'm not losing any coolant, that was my initial guess, Ford had done the test so maybe my number is off because they said it was actually at the higher end of the scale rather than too low, and upon talking to some buddies they had suggested the ignition module if that sounds possible, and its a lot easier & cheaper to fix lol. If that sounds plausible I will pick one up, but I also know that listening to buddies can send me on a wild goose chase and end up costing me more in the long run, the DPFE sensor was also changed a while back but the truck at least runs and backfires whereas it never did that before when that sensor went.

The fuel pressure spec for that vehicle is.....

Key on, engine off 35-45
Key on, engine running 30-40

you said its been running rich, so i assue that your plugs are fouled again. obviously if its running rich its nbot getting air. so maybe it needs an air filter, if you ahve an aftermarket air filter that can be an issue. maybe your iac is not working. check your throttle body to see if its working right.

I tried changing the ICM since I had a spare one from changing sensors when troubleshooting the DPFE sensor and although it didn't start, I figured I would hook booster cables up to it since constantly trying to start it and it backfiring before I thought maybe the battery was just low, and on the first hit of the starter it fired right up...just wondering what it could be since I didn't expect for that to happen.
